And after I create my edits to The Wind Waker I want to share those as well.A new Legend of Zelda mod has been posted on YouTube combining two classic games The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Once I get my thesis submitted for publication, I’ll be sure to write a blog post about my edits to A Link to the Past, as well as links to those ROMs. But also, I think that teaching myself these skills will also help me in the long run, as I’m learning that tenure-track positions in Game Studies are preferring candidates who know game development.īut in the end, I hope to share my mods with the academic community. I really think that this has a lot of potential and is pretty sexy research (I don’t know of very many scholars who are modding video games), which is appealing to a PhD student like me who wants to publish instead of perish.

What does this mean for me and my research? Well broadly, it could lead to a lot of similar research down the road, where I manipulate various aspects of these Zelda games to perform experiments. But hopefully I can first teach myself how to make 3D models in Blender and then teach myself enough about Python to mod The Wind Waker. Granted, it is not nearly as streamlined as the Hyrule Magic tool, and requires a bit of coding (which is making it difficult to me, as I am computer-science illiterate). While there is a lot of base edits being made (mostly just changing Link’s model), the tools are there to change almost anything. This tool has led many to create new models for the game as well as other forms of mods. And as it turns out, there is an emerging community of modders for this game, mostly due to the launch of a randomizer. Reflecting on it, I realized that this game also starts with a campaign to rescue a damsel in distress (technically two, first you rescue Tetra, and then you rescue Aryll). Well, this time around I want to mod The Wind Waker. This time it’s doing a similar 2 x 2 experiment with new heroes/victims for another Zelda game. Like, it keeps me up at night and I think about it a lot. And then when I was polishing my thesis trying to get it published (which is still going on right now, I’ll hopefully have more news later), I got yet another idea for my research.Īnd this second idea has really stuck with me pretty hard. When I was polishing my paper for NCA I decided to throw myself headlong into nostalgia and video games research.

I don’t know what it’s like for you guys, but I for one seem to get new ideas and inspiration whenever I reread some of my old research.
